In Chinese culture, the Horse symbolises action, freedom, speed and breakthroughs – the perfect energy for our 20th anniversary year. It is also the perfect occasion to celebrate Chinese New Year with us on 20 and 21 February. Throughout this festive weekend, Surfers Stockholm will be dressed in the colours of the New Year, inspired by the qualities of the Horse and filled with a joyful spirit.
In Chinese mythology, the Horse represents drive, independence, momentum and progress. Combined with the element of Fire, bringing intensity, urgency and passion, this year is said by wise interpreters to carry a faster pace of life and a stronger determination to achieve one’s goals.
To mark the New Year, we are adding festive celebratory dishes to the menu. Expect symbolic New Year specials designed to lift the mood: red-braised Lion’s Head meatballs for good fortune and the lucky red colour, whole fish braised with outrageously generous amounts of pickled chilli to wish for abundance in the year ahead, and aged pork with rice cakes for extra prosperity in the years to come.
As we enter the Year of the Horse, several dishes will follow that theme. How about Hunan Horse, where horse meat meets Hunan cuisine’s love of explosive wok cooking and fresh chilli? Or Horse Hoof Dry Pot, inspired by the Chinese name for water chestnut, mǎtí (“horse hoof”)?
Wishing luck, wealth and abundance to all of us as we step into the Year of the Horse. Our classics will of course remain available alongside the special New Year menu.
