The Chinese New Year is about celebrating the arrival of Spring, and is the most important celebration of the year, it is also referred to as the Lunar New Year. Legend has it that during the Spring Festival, a mythical beast called the Nian would emerge from the sea or mountains and terrorize villages, even attacking children. To protect themselves, the villagers would hide away each year.

One year, an old man decided to stay behind and face the beast. He decorated the village with red papers and set off firecrackers. When the villagers returned the next day, they were surprised to find that nothing had been destroyed. The Nian was gone. The man had discovered the beast’s weakness: it was afraid of the color red and loud noises.
From that day on, the villagers adopted these traditions. They started wearing red, hanging red lanterns and scrolls, and using firecrackers to ward off the Nian. Over time, the beast was said to have been captured by a Taoist monk named Hongjun Laozu, but the customs remain, turning Chinese New Year into a celebration of protection and new beginnings.
Today, the celebration is one of family, future fortunes and new beginnings.

We hope you decide to celebrate with us the 31st of January and the 1st of February.
